What is a Mock Newbery?
A Mock Newbery is a book club for children and adults who like to read newly published fiction books for youth, discuss them, and then debate which one they think is worthy of the illustrious Newbery Award. Mock Newbery club members learn about the qualifications for the award. At club meetings, or online at the club blog site, they analyze and share reactions and opinions on the merits of each book. In January, shortly before the real Newbery is announced, the Mock Newbery Club votes to decide which book their club would give the award to. It is an exciting and authentic way to read deeply, evaluate literature, write critically, and share opinions with others.
